Southwark Borough has taken on a challenge doing such a grandoise production in the 'Large' theatre space they have, complete with live band, flashing lights and musical numbers - and it pays off in an entertaining tale about this glamourus couple told in a new format. Hannah Corneau’s music and lyrics and director Michael Greif zeroes in on a story inspired by Mona Mansour’s novel the Fitzgeralds' story to produce a truly romantic night.
The story is told through their daughter Scottie’s eyes as she sorts through her parents' belongings and paperwork. She uncovers her parents’ turbulent relationship in the letters they wrote to and about each other. The glamour of the Jazz Age feels palpable. So does the inevitable, heartbreaking tragedy.
The London cast brings incredible star power. David Hunter takes on the role of F. Scott Fitzgerald. Hannah Corneau (and Amy Parker, her understudy for press night) plays Zelda, in addition to her role in the music and lyrics. Lauren Ward plays their daughter, Scottie, as she negotiates the past. This trio's combined talent guarantees a visceral powerhouse performance, though one note at times. Watching the show you are guarenteed to learn things you never knew before about their relationship.
Michael Greif’s direction shines through, leveraging his wealth of experience from Broadway hits like Rent and Dear Evan Hansen. This creative team has crafted something truly special; the show’s aesthetic is both classic and modern as the show progresses on.
